The aim of this work was to identify dominant factors controlling the size of an individual meal by steers offered hay and silage. In the first experiment, hay and silage made from the same sward of ryegrass, cut on the same day, were offered to surgiaclly modified steers, either times daily, at 20g DM/Kg LW. Conservation method markedly affected eating behaviour, e.g., most of the hay was eaten in one large meal, while silage was consumed in many small meals. Thus, rumen fill measured at the end of the first meal was higher in hay- than silage-fed steers. Silage showed a more rapid initial loss of DM, faster increase in rumen VFA and more rapid fall in pH than hay, suggesting that while for silage the end of the first meal may be linked to some physiological mechanism, rumen distension appears to be the primary factor in hay-fed animals. Eating appeared to increase rumen motility, but the greatest activity was found during the second half of the feeding cycle. In the second experiment, ryegrass hay was offered to similar steers once daily, either at ad libitum or at restricted (18g DM/Kg LW) levels. A 33% higher DM intake for ad libitum steers was associated with increased digesta flow at the duodeum and passege rates, but did not affect digestibility. |
