An integrated pest management (IPM) strategy based on the use of the resistant cultivar IAC 100 plus late planting, 10 to 20 of November, is suggested to cultivate soybean with minimum use of insecticides in the State of Sao Paulo. The cultivar IAC 100, specially bred for this IPM strategy, carries moderate resistance to the key pest guilder, the stink bug complex, to insect leaf feeders ant to grain spotting. Delaying planting reduces the grain filling period and consequently the stink bug damage and favors host evasion to caterpillar infestation. Late planting has the disadvantage of lower yield potential but it makes easier to cultivate soybean beacause of lower risks of a dry period in the stablishment of the crop and excess of rain at harvest time and lower probability of insect damage due to the mechanisms of host evasion. |
