In Taiwn, banana production is mainly for export. The area of banana production is about 6000-8000 ha, with an annual production of about 66,000 t are exported mainly to Japan and Korea. Pei-Chiao, which belongs to the Giant Cavendish group (AAA), is the most important cultivar and is widely grown in Taiwan. Reccently, new cultivars with disease resistance, or semidwarf plant type, were developed and released to farmers in certain regions. Somaclonal variation opens the door of an alternative method for the improvement of banana. By growing the new have resistant cultivars developed by this approach, banana growers in Taiwan have benefited from the results of this research on somaclonal variation. |
