The arrowhead scale, Unaspis yanonensis, is a key pest which has invaded citrus orchards in Japan and for which there has been no efficient natural enemy on which implementation of an integrated pest management program is based. Many studies for an alternative biological control method were conducted in our pursuit of this goal to find an efficient natural enemy. The first project was mass production of a native predator, Chilocorus Kuwane Silvestri and its mass release as a biotic insecticide. The second was an inundative release of Aphytis lingnamensis (HK-J), which was introduced from Hong Kong and considered to be effective to control the scale, but which did not hibernate in Japan. After a long period of study and many trials, the colonization of two parasites, Aphytis n. sp. and Physcus fulvus Compere and Annecke has succeeded and their establishment and effective control are expected to continue. The history of this work and related major investigations is reported here. On the basis of this work, the prospects for development of future biological control studies are discussed. |
