"Dwarf" disease of grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) and such pomelos as 'Wentan', 'Peiyu' and 'Miyu' pomelos (C. grandis L.) has been found recently in Taiwan. The disease is characterized by a bunchy appearance of new shoots with leaf curling and atrophy, internode shortening, severe stem-pitting, stunting, and malformed fruits with thick peel. Diseased trees indexed negatively for tatterleaf, xyloporosis and exocortis. The virus in question caused mild vein-clearing, and stem-pitting on 'Mexican' lime [C. aurantifolia (Christm.) Swing.] and no seedling-yellows (SY) symptoms on 'Eureka' lemon [C. limon (L.) Burm, F.], but developed prominent leaf yellowing and crinkling on grapefruit and pomelo seedlings. The causal virus showed strong a ELISA reaction and flourescent antibody staining with antibody against the Hassaku dwarf strain of citrus triateza virus (CTV). The dwarf disease may be attributed to a strain of CTV distinct from the current strains of CTV-SY. Grapefruit and pomelo seedlings infected with this dwarf strain of CTV (CTV-D) showed higher ELISA values (OD405) than in the same citrus seedlings inoculated with a common isolate of CTV-SY. The latter isolate replicated to higher concentration in 'Ponkan' and 'Tankan' mandarins (C. reticulata Blanco) than CTV-D. |
