Extensive landscapes of complex configurations, livestock behaviors, and limited capital resources complicate the optimal location of range improvements. A cost effective tool for use by natural resource managers in locating additional water sites and land treatments is presented. Spatial characteristics and attributes of a landscape were entered into a geographical information system (ARCINFO) to create a data base. A grazing pressure index was modeled using an algorithm which sequentially adjusts grazing capacity of response units for percent lost to brush density, slope, and distance from water respectively. A bio-economic analysis system, using the modeled grazing pressure, was conducted to evaluate potential water sites based first, on potential grazing land harvest and second, by comparing the annualized net present values of two different water facility developments. The system was then used to determine optimal areas of a landscape for improved forage development considering costs of treatment, forage response to treatment, and different capital expenditures. |
