Although grasslands are normally thought of as well-drained areas, they also occur in areas of high humidity. Where the grassland is permanently aquatic, it harbours an aquatic fauna contrasting strongly with the terrestrial fauna of savannahs and other well-drained grasslands. Intermediate between these two ecosystems is the seasonally flooded grassland, such as that described here at Castlrpoint, New Zealanmd, where the protozoa fauna of 94 species contained 35% aquatic-terrestrial and 45% freshwater forms. The latter appeared during winter when several centimetres of water covered the soil, and included Heliozoa, Gromia, and the tube-building Stichotricha. Such grasslands are at such times shallow temporary ponds, and illustrate transitions between freshwater and soil ecosystems. |
