The Eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) has caused extensive losses in localized areas of young citrus in southwest Florida by girdling trees between crown roots and soil line. A replicated field trial was conducted in a commercial grove to test the ability of the insecticide chlorpyrifos (Lorsban 15G) applied to the soil surface immediately adjacent to the trunk or inside the tree wrap to arrest damage and allow healing. Other trials evaluated the effect on termite activity of planting depth of resets and soil removal around young establish trees. Lorsban 15G applied in November eliminated termites from most trees through spring, allowing lesions to partially or completely heal, although bark scaling occurred where the incecticidewas held in contact with trunk. Both shallow planting depth and soil removal at tree base to the level of crown roots reduced risk of termite damage. Observations are presented which show that feeding on live trees is confined to bark and cambium, sap wood being consumed only after it is dry and seasoned. |
