Cerrados are savanna formation which exist in Brazil and occupy approximately 203,760,000 hectares of land representing 24% of the brazilian territory. Of this area, 55,2% have soil characteristics which classify them as arable. The land releif in its majority is flat or rolling. Populational growth and concentration is the coastal region allied to the development of the country and the ever increasing shortage of fertile soils, has forced agriculture to increase its productivity and mainly expand its agricultural frontiers towards the tropics, occupying the Cerrados region. The soybean grown in the Cerrado region began to have national expression in the end of the 1970' decade. |
