The purpose of this work was to study the physical, chemical morphological, and mineralogical characteristics related to the genesis of the soil profile in the region of Iracemapolis (S.P.). The clay fraction of the soil was studied and genetic interpretation together with the evaluation of the weathering stages of the profile was made. Finally, the soil was classified according to the new system of soil classification used in the United States of America. One profile was taken from each unit of soil. Soil samples were collected frome each horizon starting from the surface down to the rock. The morphological study was made in a ditch dug to a depth of 2m and by using an auger below this depth. The mineralogical analysis of the clay fraction were carried out, first, by removing soluble salts, organic matter, manganese dioxide, and free iron oxides fo the soil sample, followed by dispersion and siphoning of the clay suspension. The amount of silica and alumina extractable with 0,5 NaOH, total K2O content, and, the cation exchange capacity were determined. Furthermore, differential thermal analysis, and X-ray analysis were also made. The results of the mineralogical analysis showed that in the profile studied, the most abundant mineral was Kaolinite, amounting to a round 42%. The second abundant mineral was amorphous material amounting to around 16%. The 2: 1 type clay minerals, (mica, vermiculite, and montmorillonite), amounted to around 40% of the clay fraction. Diffractograms of X-ray analysis did not show the presence of quartz in the profile studied.
