Since the isolation of bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) in 1972 there has been little discovered about BIV-infection in ruminants. In this study sheep exposed to BIV were evaluated for one year post-inoculation (pi) to detect any sign of disease or immune dysfunction. BIV was transmited by blood transfusion from sheep inoculated with BIV-infected cell culture material to naive sheep (exposed group). Subsequently 5 out of 6 sheep in the BIV-exposed group produced anti-BIV antibodies. There was no loss in general condition of either the exposed or the control sheep, and no evidence of anemia or leukocytosis. The plasma protein concentration was decreased in the BIV-exposed group from 6-10 months and there were significant increases in numbers of neutrophils (3 months pi) and numbers of eosinophils (7 months pi). Flow cytometric analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes revealed increased percent positive B and CD4 + T-cells at 2 months pi in the BIV-exposed group of sheep. This was possibly related to the anti-BIV antibody response. The in vitro lymphoproliferative response of the sheep was not significantly altered due to BIV-exposure and there were no abnormal immune responses of the BIV-exposed group compared to the control group of sheep at 10 monts pi. |
