The results are presented of surveys in the UK in 1974-79 of the poisoning of honey bees [Apis mellifera L.] by insecticides applied in sprays to field bean [Vicia faba], grain crops and oil seed rape. It is shown from a comparison with 6 other insecticides that triazophos is highly toxic to honey bees, the LD50 (in mu g/bee) being 0.055 for its contact toxicity and 0.074 for its oral action. Special attention is paid to the use of triazophos on rape (mainly against Ceutorhynchus assimilis (Payk.), Dasineura brassicae (Winn.) and Meligethes spp.) and it is shown that many honey bees were poisoned by these treatments, especially in 1978. Causes of the incidents and methods of avoidance are discussed. |
