The AZSCHED irrigation scheduling program provides information on the estimated date and amount of irrigation for sixteen diferent crops including resolving the conflict between the estimated cutting dates and irrigation dates for alfafa. The accuracy of these predictions is directly related to the accuracy of program inputs. Under Arizona conditions, program inputs such as depth of water applied and soil water holding capacity can be inaccurate enough that significant plant stresses or over irrigation could result. Estimates of possible input value inaccuracies are carried through all soil water balance calculations to indicate the possible inaccuracy of program predictions. The effect of improving the accuracy of any variable or combination of variables in the presence of the total environment of inaccuracy is easily found. Recommendations for parameter improvement are made based on the significance and capacity for improvement. Information requirements are stimates of the variability of soil water holding capacity, crop coefficients, irrigation measurement, irrigation efficiency and reference ET with location. The user is required to indicate the method of irrigation measurement, source of soil property information, location of the scheduling site and estimated accuracy of rainfall amounts. The additional information requirements for the user are minimal compared to the gain in decision support. |
