A replicated field trial and a pot culture experiment were conducted to study the effect of soil moisture stress during pre-flowering and post-flowering periods on growth and yield of 4 cultivars of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Soil-moisture stress during pre-flowering period induced the plants to produce more flowers. Since the percentage of bolls set was not affected by this treatment, the increased number of flowers brought about an increase in the number of bolls per plant, which eventually resulted into higher production of seed cotton per plant as well as per hect. The treatment of soil moisture stress during the post-flowering period, however, showed unfavourable effect on most of the plant characters and also on the yield. A soil moisture stress during the pre-flowering period in cotton is, thus, recommended as a practice for growers of Northern India. |
