The advent of powerful, low cost desktop computing and access to extensive basic weather information has allowed the rapid development of weather information targeted for agriculture. Utilizing a comprehensive data base of real time and climatological data, numerical weather forecasts, satellite and radar imagery, and other weather information, thousands of products are automatically being generated for use by southeast agricultural interests. Weather inputs are also automatically fed into various management models for cotton, peanuts, poultry, fruit crops, and other commodities, generating additional products. To make this vast amount of information available to agricultural useers, the resources of the Internet are being exploited to provide transparent access to information. Examples of the application of these Internet resources including an almanac server, anonymous file transfer protocol, electronic mail. Gopher, and the network file system, will be described. Thousands of automated transactions take place daily between Auburn University and users in Florida, Georgia, Mississipi, and North Carolina. Use of available Internet resources has allowed timely agricultural weather information to be available to agricultural interests in an efficient, cost effective manner. |
