The Alabama Cooperative Extension Service (ACES) began its computerization efforts in 1983. The goal of this endeavor was to enhance the delivery of useful academic information to ACES employees and clientele throughout the state. Within six years, more than 800 personal computers (PCs) were installed for use by ACES staff. In 1987, efforts were undertaken to implement a statewide Extension computer network. The Alabama Cooperative Extension Network (ACENET) has matured into a very sophisticated, yet conceptually simple, wide area computer network which is an integral portion of dozens of ongoing Extension programs. ACENET is dynamic and will continue to evolve, employing additional technologies that further the Extension mission in Alabama. |
