There are few data on this small South American cat, commonly called the pampas-cat. Its rusty color makes the species very distinctive from its nearest allies. Its range is still not very well known. Open lands are its characteristics habitat, and in Brazil its found in the open fields of Pantanal and Cerrado of Goias. At the present time there is a specimen housed in Goiania's Zoological park. The specimen, a sub-adult male, was donated to the zoo, with one and a half of age approximatly. It presented a dark striped coat and black limbs. During its development the dark brown color was gradually substituted by a rusty color, with the the black bans persisting on the limbs, a basic characteristic of the species. The body sharpe is very smimilar to the domestic cat, normally leading to width 5.3 cm lenth-8.9 cm; total lenth-69,5 cm; tail-24 cm; neck-16.5 cm. weight-2.6 kg. It was observed that the animal has great skill for climbing and jumping and that when frightened prefers to climb a tree branch instead of hiding. It has been fed with fresh meat since its arrival and at times with live mice that it with great skill. |
