During the last few years, conservation planning has been an issue of major concern to describe good land management procedures and strategies to prevent degradation of natural resources while enhancing agricultural production. There is a need for useful and accurate information to promote conservation practices. The USDA-Soil Conservation Service (SCS) has concentrated efforts since 1982 on the National Resources Inventory (NRI) that is carried out every 5 years for inventorying and monitoring natural resources in the USA. One of the data items collected during the inventory is conservation practices needs, which in turn is the major goal of SCS. The decision whether or not to recommend conservation practices has been based on the experience and ability ofinventorying specialists. Additionally, data stored in the NRI database is not fully explored to provide the information necessary to help in the decision process. For recommendation of conservation practices we proposed a knowledge-based expert system that combines the expertise of several individuals to identify areas of major problems and to provide recommendations of conservation practices that may solve the problems identified. The system reasons on data available in the NRI and SCS-SOILS-5 databases and formulates recommendations for sample sites used during the inventory. A prototype of the system for water erosion control and drainage systems is implemented for two counties of Indiana. This system will help conservation professionals, decision ...
