This thesis has several objectives. The first study followed the growth of Phaseolus vulgaris L. 'Bush Blue Lake 290' leaves. The development of leaf area and leaf thickness, including each major internal tissue and intercellular space volume, was recorded at close intervals. Diffusion resistance was repeatedly measured during growth. The repeated measurement of a single leaf's gas exchange using a clamp type cuvette caused concern about the physical effect the cuvette itself might be having on the bean leaf and subsequently on gas measurements. This study indicated that some surface injury did occur when cuvettes were clamped onto leaves, but no effect on gas exchange was noted. The final two studies sought to relate ozone sensitivity to several of the developmental parameters investigated in the first study, plus the addition of photosynthetic and total chlorophyll determinations. These studies provided insight into the characteristics of the leaf when it was most sensitive and correlated initial responses to various 03 doses with either recovery or continued effect. |
