A computer program was developed to determine the least cost, number and size of machines for corn-soybean farms in the Corn Belt. The program was designed as an educational tool and for assisting farmers with their machinery purchase decisions. Input data required for the program are the field operations to be performed, the earliest starting date and acres involved in each operation, and the order in which the operations are to be scheduled. Cost of labor and the hours per day labor is available in the field also are used as input data. Trials are made with various numbers and sizes of machines. For each trial, machine productivity, available labor hours, and workday (weather) probabilities are used to schedule the field operations. Costs calculated include the fixed and variable machinery cost, labor cost and a timeliness cost, if applicable. Printed output includes the machinery set resulting in the minimum total cost, and for that set of machinery, the schedule of the field operations, the annual use of each machine, and an itemized list of the costs. |
