The purpuose of this study was to investigate the effects of an agro-pastoral system on soil chemical and physical properties and to compare the production of soybean between the agro-pastoral system and a continuous croppping system. Therefore, experiments in an agro-pastoral system have been conducted in CETAPAR-JICA Paraguay since 2003. Soybean production in agro-pastoral plots during the 2002-2004 and 2004-2005 cropping seasons was 1.48 ton/ha and 3.56 ton/ha, respectively. On the other had, production in continuos crop-cultivation lots was 0,65 ton/ha and 1.91 ton/ha, respectivelly. The soybean production of agro-pastoral plots was twice as high as that of continuous crop-cultivation plots. The concentrations of P.K. and Mgat the soil surgace in agro-pastoral plots were significantly lower than those in the continuous crop-cultivation plots. Guineagrass appeared to absorb the nutrients from the soil under conditions of low fertilization. However, the concentrations of Ca were not different betwee the plots. The content of organic matter in soil at each depth measured in the agro-pastoral plots, was significantly higher than that of the continuous cro-cultivation plots. In addition, the physical properties (gaseous phase of soil, bulk density and soil aggrefate of the soil werw improved by the supply of litter and extension of guineagrass (Panium maximum)roots. It was concluded that these properties have positive effects in the agro-pastoral system. |
