The guava is the important pomiferous fruit of the Myrtle family. Hedrick lists 15 species of the genus Psidium, all of which are native to tropical America. Only one species, Psidium guajava L., is grown commercially to any great extent and this species has been introduced into the West Indies, Florida, India, West and South Africa, and several of the pacific island groups. This is the species which grows wild in the wet valleys and on the mountain slopes throut the Territory of Hawaii. |
