The first Spanish cattle breeds brought by settlers, that reached the Pantanal, later joined with Portuguese breeds and its descandants, to form a local breed called the Pantaneiro bovine. Cuiabano or Tucura. Through the natural selection and evolutionary adaptative process, these cattle became adapted to the climate, hidrologic and ecological conditions of the Pantanal (16o - 22o S and 55o - 58o W), a flooded region in upper Paraguay river basin. Since the beginning of this century, these populations have been gradually substituted by Zebu cattle, placing this genetic resource in danger of extinction. Aiming to conserve the Pantaneiro bovine, the Pantanal Agricultural Research Center (CPAP-EMBRAPA) founded a conservation bank at its experimental station, Nhumirim Ranch, located within the Pantanal. The purpose of this study is to determine the phenotypic pattern of the Pantaneiro bovine, for the period in which historic data are available and to analyse the remaining populations including the Nhumirim Ranch herd. Litarature on the subject is very scarce, particularly from the 17th to 19th centuries. Some publications from the beginning of the 20th century describe the Pantaneiro cattle phenotype as follows: small size; short red or brown hair with lighter coloration on the back; horns are short and thin, upturned and point to the front; white ring around the snout and a lighter circle around the eyes. However, since the end of the 19th century, it has been interbreeding with other breeds, mainly the ...
