In semihard wood cuttings of Justicia gendarusa Linn. presence of leafhas shown a distinctly beneficial effect on root formation with or without growth substances. Between auxins IBA and NAA the latter has given greater root promoting effect. Antiauxin MH has inhibited rooting irrespective of leafy or leafless cuttings. Total protein and soluble nitrogens are found to be greater in the root forming regions of leafy cuttings than in leafless cuttings. Maximum amount of these nitrogen fractions are noted under NAA and minimum under MH during the root forming stages. Total and reducing sugar contents are also noted to be the highest under NAA durring root forming stages. At a later stage, after root formation had advanced, the contents of these substances show adecline increasing with increasing rooting effect. |
