Corn is an important grain crop and the maize weevil is the most serious pest of stored corn in tropical and subtropical areas. Corn varieties and hybrids resistant to maize weevil could have immediate application in areas where this insect pest is prevalent. In this research some techniques have been refined to allow researchers to screen for resistance to maize weevil in many corn selections. Results can be obtined in one week to 3 months, susceptible corn or is to identify the resistant and intermediately number of days to run the tests are deciding gactors in determining which tecniques to use. The results clearly showed a preference of the maize weevil for certain corn types. Some corn populations and respective inbreds were significantly more to resistant to maize weevil for certain corn types. Some corns populations and respective inbreds were significantly more resistant to maize weevil reproduction and feeding, as measured by number of offspring produced and weigty loss off grains. Some resistant parent populations transmitted their resistance factor(s) to their respective inbreds, but other intermediately resistant parents produces inbreds which were higly susceptible. Also, the resusts depected some inbreds which were more resistant than their respective parents. It was demontrated that the maize weevil can distinguish the susceptible kernels from the resistant ones withing a mixed source. Thus the maize weevil could be a valuable tool to identify resistant kernels at low frequency in (...)
