The use of cover crop or crop residue as a source of N to succeeding crops has become a matter of increasing importance for economic and environmental reason. Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the N contribution of four 15N labelled crop residues, rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L), crimson clover (Trifolium encarnatum L), and heiry vetch (Vicia sativa L), to successive crops and to evaluate the effect of different organic (ON) and inorganic n (IN) combinations on mineralization of the above residues. Total 15N recovery from the residues ranged from 51% to 85% and 4% to 74% for the greenhouse and field studies, respectively. The first crop in each study accounted for about 50% and 75%, respectively, of the above total 15N recovery. |
