The present work reports the results of two experiments to determine the effect of high temperature and high humidity on various breeds of cattle. The first experiment refers to the behaviour of Santa Gertrudis and Brahman heifer calves both before and after weaning. The second experiment involved heifers of a year of age of the following breeds: Brahman, Santa Gertrudis, Criollas, (F2) Brown-Swiss x Red-Sindhi, Holstein, Guernesey, Ayrshire and Jersey. Four heifers per breed were used. The reading for adaptability were taken in short time test in a climatological chamber using exposures of six hours to two different atmospheres: one called a "stress - atmosphere" of 105oF (40.5C) with a wet bulb reading of 85of (29.4C) or 25.5mm. Hg vapor pressure; and one called a "normal Turrialba" atmosphere at 75oF (25.C) with a wet bulb reading of 65.F (18.3C) or 13mm. Hg vapor pressure. |
