The influence of standing dead material and roots of the tall snow tussoks Chinochloa macra, C. rigida, and C. flavescens, and the short tussocks Poa colensoi and Festuca novae-zealandiae on net soil nitrogen (N) mineralisation was determined with soil from introduced pasture. Particular interest was attached to F. novae-zealandiae because it was the dominant tussock species ar 2 sites (Cluden and Timan) whose topsoil frequently showed negligible rates of net soil N mineralisation. When added to soil at a concentration of 1 per cent dry weight, all freeze-dried and ground material inhibited net soil N mineralisation, but had little effect on nitrification of the ammonium-N produced. No marked differences among tussock species occurred. Aqueous extracts of tussock roots had generally little effect on net soil N mineralisation. Some extracts from standing dead material had a stimulatory influence, which differed considerably among species. This stimulation was related more to the N content of the extracts than to contents of P or soluble carbohydrates; it was negatively, but not significantly, related to content of phenologic compounds. In additional samples of standing dead material, amounts of extractable N differed considerably from those previously found. Overall, no consistent differences in exctractable N among species were observed. Results generally indicate that differences in soil N mineralisation patterns at tussock-grassland sites cannot be ascribed to the influence of standing dead material or roots of the different tussock species examined.
