A study on regeneration after clear-cutting and burning was carried out in a primary lowland forest in Lempake, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Two (0.5 ha each) contiguous clear-cut plots were established. One was burnt, the other unburnt, and observations were carried out over a period of 78 weeks. In the early stage of succession, seedlings played a more important role than resprouts. The number of species, percentage of cover and frequency of seedlings and resprouts, as well as the number of primary forest species, were greater in the unburnt than in the burnt plot. The dominant species in the unburnt and burnt plots differed, even though the plots were adjacent. It is suspected that recovery in the unburnt plot could be attributed mainly to the undisturbed seed-bank in the soil, as indicated by a high number of primary forest species developed therefrom. THe natality period in the unburnt plot was longer than in the burnt plot, but was followed by high mortality, particularly of light demanding species. |
