Cashew seedling trees (Anacardium occidentale) growing in red earths showed rapid increases in tree dry weight over the period 6-70 months. Root systems generally accounted for less than 20% of total dry weight, with the majority of the root mass and number located in the top 40 cm of soil. Two major growth periods were identified as the 12-40 month pre-maturation phase, and the 40-70 month maturation phase. Associated with the growth phases were large increases in nutrient accumulation by tree components. Canopy biomass fallout of leaves, cashew apples and flowers, and the subsequent nutrient release, was calculated to supply 15.5-37.7% of tree total requirements of macro-nutrients at Year 6. Tentative nutrient balance sheets were developed, in which the inputs and extractions from biomass nutrient cycling, water and soil reserves and tree requirements for growth and fruiting were used to estimate the net nutrient requirements in the pre-maturation and maturation phases. |
