A trial was initiated to study the effect of different levels of N, P and K (each at three levels) on growth, yield, quality and petiole composition of "Coorg Honey Dew" papaya at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore. The plant height and girth were affecred by different levels of N and P. Phosphorus and K had no effect on plant height at first flowering and number of days taken for 50 per cent flowering. Phosphorus levels increased the fruit yield significantly, whereas K has improved the fruit quality. The application of N, P and K increased the concentration of respective elements significantly in papaya petioles. Different levels of N had more pronounced effect than that of P and K on petiole concentration of N, P, K, Ca Mg and S. Highly significant correlation was obtained between yield and petiole P concentration. The petiole attached to sixth fully opened leaf from the top reflect the relationship P with yield better than the petiole at eleventh position. The best fertilizer dose was found to be 250 g N, 375 g P2 O5 and 500 g K2 O per plant per year, which produced a yield of 155,5 tonnes per hectare fresh fruits in a period of 24 months. |
