Twelve cows in early lactation were divided into control and supplemented groups.
Supplemented group was given 0.5 gm. copper sulphate with the basal ration. Blood copper levels; erythrocyte and leucocyte count; per cent gaemoglobin; plasma B. carotene and vitamin A values were estimated and production performance was studied. Copper
supplementation was found to significancy (P < 0.01) increase the blood copper levels,
cellular count and haemoglobin per cent. All animals of the supplemented group came to
heat with visible symptoms in 105.3 +- 5 22 days. Supplementation of copper was found to exert a significant (P < 0.5) increase in fat content of milk temporarily although the milk yield was not affected. It is suggested that most of the complaints of delayed ostrus in cows may be due to borderline copper deficiency which may be rectified by supplementing, with 0.5 gm. copper sulphate per day cow to ensure regular reproduction and better health. |
