A field experiment for the characterization of Indian banana accessions using 21 morphological descriptors realized substantial variability for all the characters. The performance of AAA genotypes was better than AAB/ABB genotypes concerning plant height and productivity. Basrai 10 Gy variant was significantly superior to its mother clone, Basrai, in terms of bunch weight, and exhibited the highest harvest index of all. Plant height, days to flower and harvest, bunch weight, harvest index and fruit weight varied over a wide range. The phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were of high magnitude for peel weight, fruit density, fruit volume, pulp weight and plant weight. Almost all the traits maintained a narrow gap between phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation coupled with high heritability estimates, indicating less environmental interference. Plant height, bunch weight, plant weight, harvest index, peel weight, pulp weight, fruit volume and fruit weight exhibited high estimates of heritability as well as genetic advance, indicating probability of improvement for these traits via selection. |
