The comparative feeding value of oat hay and wheat straw in sheep was compared. Twelve weaned Nali lambs were fed oat hay or wheat straw for 6 mo. in addition to the concentrate diet consisting of 50 parts of groundnut-cake, 40 parts of maize and 10 parts of wheat bran along with minerals and vitamins. All the conditions were kept identical in both the groups except roughage feeding, i.e., chopped oat hay in group 1 and wheat straw in group 2. There was significantly higher digestibility of all the organic constituents, except ether extract and higher Ca and P balances in the oat hay group than in the wheat straw group. N balance and consumption of digestible crude protein were also higher in the oat hay group. Although dry-matter consumption was not significantly different on a per cent body weight basis between these groups, the metabolizability of the ration was significantly higher in the oat hay group. There was significantly higher (P < 0.01) growth rate and wool yield in the oat hay group than in the wheat straw group. Medullation percentage and fiber diameter of whole samples were significantly higher, while crimps/cm and pure fiber diameter were significantly lower in the oat hay group than in the wheat straw group. Better nutritional value of oat hay was observed, although wheat straw was quite palatable and could satisfy the dry matter requirement. |
