Muzaffarnagari lambs (60) reared on supplemental feeding and weaned at 80 days were fed 4 levels of energy (1.8, 2.0, 2.1 and 2.3 Mcal ME[metabolizable energy]/kg of ration in groups T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively) and a common level of DCP [digestible crude protein] through various concentrate-to-roughage ratios. The ME level of group T1 was increased to 2.0 Mcal/kg by adding liquid molasses. The mean time required to attain 25 and 35 kg body weights were significantly lower in group T4. The lambs in group T1 did not gain beyond 30 kg after 471 days of feeding. Carcass measurements were dependent on the body weights rather than on energy levels and age. The difference due to treatments were non-significant. Pre-slaughter starvation shrinkage was greater in high roughage groups (T1 and T2) than low roughage groups (T3 and T4). For optimum carcass yield and measurements, 2.1 Mcal ME/kg of ration was more practical and relatively economical. |
