Studies were conducted to observe if formalin when given in drinking water performs the same function as when given in treated meals. Nali lambs (12) were given formalin in drinking water just after feeding concentrate diet to protect the dietary protein from microbial proteolysis. Observations were compared with those of untreated group where no formalin was given. The feed given was 70% of the ARC Agricultural Research Council requirement. There was significantly decreased growth rate and wool production by feeding formalin in drinking water. Although there was no effect on dry-matter consumption, significantly decreased water consumption and higher N retention and digestibility of ether extract and NFE [N free extract] was observed by feeding formalin in drinking water. |
