Nali lambs were kept on 5 treatments, i.e., untreated groundnut-cake (GNC) (100% ARC [Agricultural Research Council]), untreated-GNC.sbd.control, tannic-acid-treated GNC, formaldehyde-treated GNC and heat-treated GNC. The last 4 groups were fed 70% of ARC requirements. Concentrate diet consisted of 50% GNC treated or untreated, 40% maize and 10% wheat bran along with minerals and vitamins. Roughage used was wheat straw during the first 7 mo. (phase 1) and urea-molasses-impregnated wheat straw during the next 6 mo. (phase 2). There was a significant increase in wool yield in formaldehyde-treated group during the experimental shearing in both the phases. Wool production increased by 26, 9, 36 and 12% during 13 mo. of study in untreated group 1, and tannic-acid-, formaldehyde- and heat-treated groups, respectively, than in the control group 2. There was a marked effect of formaldehyde treatment on wool growth. There was significant decrease in crimps in tannic- and heat-treated groups during phase 1. Medullation percentage was higher in formaldehyde- and heat-treated groups. No effect of treatment on staple length, fiber diameter and yellowing of wool was observed. |
