Some viral diseases are a real threat for the production of bananas (Dale et al. 1986). Different symptoms have been observed in commercial banana fields in Costa Rica that could be associated with viral infection. These symptoms are "distorted candle leaf", rugose leaves with thickened and chlorotic veins, pockets of necrosis in the sheaths, mild or severe chlorosis, chlorotic strealing or flecking, and bunched leaves at the apex of the plant. CORBANA (Corporacion Bananera nacional) and the University of Costa Rica have started a cooperative research project to characterize the viral diseases has been reported in Costa Rica"s plantations - cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), the type member of the Cucumovirus group (Brioso et al. 1986) - the possibility of finding other virus diseases in present. |
