The relationship of the density of chlamydospores (cs) or zoospores (zs) in soil to the incidence of the infection and mortality of papaya seedlings was investigated. Chlamydospores were produced by submerging cultures of Phytophthora palmivora, that had been grown for 7 days at 25 C in V-8 juice broth, in sterile destilled water for 3 wk at 18 C. Autoclaved soil was infested with suspensions of cultures that had been sonificated to leave only cs as viable propagules, and soil samples were plated on a selective medium to check the calculated cs density. |
