Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a staple food in many parts of the world, where it is often grown as a carbohydrate source by subsistence farmers in developing countries. Traditional breeding of cassava is difficult due to its allopolyploid nature, heterozygosity and its low natural fertility. In cecent years it has become clear that biotechnology could make a significant contribution to cassava improvement. Although much research has been done on regeneration and embryogenesis from somatic (leaf) tissue, reports on regeneration and embryogenesis from anther and anther tissues are still limited. such information would be useful to induce haploidy in cassava. The aim of this study therefore was to examine the embryogenic potential of floral material of the cassava cultivar MCOL 1505. |
