Soybean yields in Southeast Asia are lower than those obtained in tropical latitudes in other countries such as Brazil where cultivar development has underpinned massive expansion of soybean production. A critical component of cultivar development has been the use of "juvenile" gene(s) to improve tropical adaptation. This paper reports the performance of Brazilian and Nigerian germplasms when grown in different seasons, and in diverse locations in Thailand. Brazilian genotypes have slightly longer growth duration than traditional Thai cultivars but have the potential to increase yields of upland wet season crops to a level that makes soybean potentially suitable as sole crops rather than as relay crops. Results observed in Thailand may be applicable in other Southeast Asian production areas. |
