An index of potential compaction (PCI) is proposed and utilized to compare the soil compaction potential of tires which are commonly utilized in agricultural production. A foam rubber model was utilized to ilustrate the relative effects that load, tire size, shape and dual versustandem tire arrangements may have on subsurface compaction. The results support the previously recognized concepts that the degree of surface compaction depends upon the contact pressure, where as the depth of compaction depends upon the contact area, the width of the tire contact, and the total load carried by the tire. |
