Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the more important tropical fruit in the Philippines. In 1986, the total national production was 90 metric tons (MAF, 1987) but production continues to deccline due to papaya ringspot virus (PRV). The occurrence of the disease in the Philippines was first observed in limited areas in Silang, Cavite in 19982. By the middle of 1984, PRV spread like a "wild fire" infecting abbout 200 ha of papaya farms with 60 to 100% incidence and an estimated yield loss of about P6,309,000 (Opina, 1986). The disease has been the major limiting factor in papaya production in many countries of the world for more than 20 years (Conover, 1976. |
