A group from the Facultad de Veterinaria de la Universidad de Cordoba, Spain, has been working over the past years to characterise and define the different varieties that compound the Iberian pig breed. Many studies describe the lineage's morphologic and productive characteristics, as well as characterise genetic markers through ADN microsatelites. The present study shall complement information about one of the main Iberian pig breeds, important for its value in the European meat market, establishing a germplasm bank whick will help to conserve "ex-situ" genetic variability. The survival of the breed is seriously compromised by the drastic reduction on its population. The present study shall develop the framework and methodology for characterisation of the Iberian pig male of distinct lineage through reproductive tract anatomy, aptitude and sexual behaviour during artificial insemination (AI) programs. Its main goal is the settlement of a semen bank of the distinctive varieties on the brink of extinction. |
