The effects of the original soil pH (4.4) and adjusted to 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 with CaCO3, to 6.0 withMgCO3, to 5.5 with CaCO3 plus CaSO4, and CaSO4 at original pH (4.4) on the root growth and mineral contents of four citrus rootstocks (Volkamer lemon, Rangpur lime, Cleopatra mandarin, and Sunki mandarin) were determined in a nursery experiment. The soil was an Oxisol (Typic Haplorthox, U. S. Soil Taxonomy) with acid pH CaCl2 of 4.4., low base saturation and high Al saturation. Root growth increased with increasing soil pH adjusted with CaCO3, CaCO3 plus CaSO4, and CaSO4 treatments. The MgCO3 treatment had no effect on root growth. The citrus rootstocks growth followed the order: Volkamer =Rangpur lime > Cleopatra > Sunki. The Volkamer and Rangpur rootstocks showed the best performance in acid soil conditions and the highest response to lime. Sunki mandarin was the poorest rootstock under acid soil condition. The concentrations of N, P, K, Mg, Cu, and Zn in root and leaf tissues were unchanged with soil amendments, While ca increased and Mn decreased with increasing soil pH adjusted with CaCO3. Optimumroot growth was associated with the two soil acidity variables: decreased Al concentration and improved Ca nutrition. |
