Two indigenous and one exotic pure line cowpea cultivars differing in many polyphonic traits were crossed to study the inheritance of yield and its components. The parental cultivars, F1's, F2's and back crossed of two crosses were grown in the field in a complete randomized block design and observations were recorded for thirteen quantitative traits. Analysis of variance was performed and components of variance, heritability and genetic advance were calculaded, each by different methods and tested for significance. The results revealed that the additive component of variance was more important for most of the characters in the two crosses under study. However, dominance component had an upper hand in the expression of the traits, viz number of pods/plant, grain yield/plant and 100-seed weight. The environmental variance was of little significance. Partial dominance exerted greater influence on majority of the characters. Heritability estimates were moderate to high for all the traits. Predominance of additive genetic variance, coupled with relatively high heritability and genetic advance for majority of the yield components revealed their probable usefulness in selection scheme. |
