Evaluation of reproductive effort (RE) in sunflower in terms of accumulate energy (calories) in carbohydrates and protein of harvest organs (fruits) and in total biomass was done. Plants of cv. Continental P-75 (short season hybrid) were grown under irrigation and the following growth conditions were imposed: low density (5.6 plants/m2); high density (16.6 plants/m2); artificial shading (plants covered with a polypropilene sheet); upper and lower defoliation. The last three treatments were performed during the postanthesis period. Only earial biomass was recorded. Plants grown under low density, high density and defoliated in the lower canopy layers reached the same R.E. values. On the other hand, shading and the elimination of leaves of the upper canopy llayers decreased the R.E. about 30% and 60% respectively. It is suggested that although cultivated sunflower have a great plasticity on their seed size, reproductive capacity ean be maintained if competition by light only is located in canopy layers that can be dispensables for allocation of carbohydrates in the grain filling period. High leaf efficiency (grain weight/dm2 of leaf area) of the remainder active photosynthetic area and plastic responses from other organs for carbohydrate allocation, particularly the stem, can explain the behaviour of plants under these light stress conditions. |
