In reviewing the literature on cystitis and pyelonephritis attibuted to Corynebacterium suis, one comes to the conclusion that many aspects remain uninvestigated. For example: 1- Pathogenicity of different strains to sows. 2- The mode of transmission of disease. 3- Susceptibility of sows to infection after service, during pregnancy and after parturition. 4- Differentiation between strains isolated from sows and boars. 5- Pathogenicity to laboratory animals. Two of these areas were the object of this study: biochemical and antigenic differentiation between C.suis strains, and pathogenicity to mice. Fourteen strains, originating from cases of pyelonephritis were studied by biochemical test and immunodiffusion in gel. Analysis of combined results of the tests grouped strains with different properties and there appear to be a basis for separating C.suis strain isolated from the prepuce of a boar from strains derived from sows. Intravenous and intraperitoneal inoculation of 14 C.suis cultures into 23 mice were unable to produce pyelonephritis. |
