The present work deals with the beachrocks that occur between the forte and barra do cunhau beachs, covering about 60km of the east coast of the Rio Grande do Norte State. Two subparallel lines of beachrocks are present in this area, reaching locally continuous extensions of up to 8km. They are constituted by coarse grained, mature, bioclastic quartzarenites. The most continuous beachrock line, informally called beachrock 1, is about 4700 Y.B.P. in age and has undergone many phases of exposure and submersion due to sea-level fluctuations. These phases have been reconstituted by studying the diagenetic evolution of this beachrock, and the results were correlated to the Salvador(BA), sea-level fluctuation curve, established by Suguio et al.(1985). |
