ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of four medicinal plants using Anacardium humile, Syzygium cumini, Genipa americana and Solanum lycocarpum leaves as an alternative for the control of Haemonchus contortus. The in vitro test used was hatchability of eggs (EHT) using increasing concentrations (3,12 mg/mL, 6,25 mg/mL, 12,5 mg/mL, 25 mg/mL, 50 mg/mL and 100 mg/mL) of aqueous extract (AE) of plants on H. contortus eggs. A. humile AE showed the lowest LC50 (lethal concentration) value of 4,14 mg/mL, followed by S. cumini 12,35 mg/mL. In S. lycocarpum EHT, the highest concentration tested (100 mg/mL) had at an inhibition rate of 14,20 % of hatchability, and in G. americana, there was an inhibition rate of 18,27 %, so the LC50 of these plants was much higher than the others. For in vivo tests, 30 lambs, males and females, Santa Ines (crossbred), naturally-infected were divided into 5 treatments: a negative control (no use of medicinal plant), and four others that received 30 g of the following plants dried and milled: A. humile, G. Americana, S. lycocarpum and S. cumini. The experimental period was 28 days: 7 days of confinement adaptation, 14 days for the treatment with plants and 7 days for the residual period. After 7 days of adaptation, at 0, 7, 14 and 21days, body weights, blood samples for eosinophil count and fecal egg counts per gram of feces (EPG) were taken. The following reductions in EPG were observed in 14 day: a 25,55 % reduction in the control, 66,04 % in the A. humile treatment, 66,18 % in the G. americana treatment, 53,53 % in the S. lycocarpum treatment and 67,73 % in the S. cumini treatment. In residual period (21 day), in A. humile treatment showed reduction of 47,84 % lycocarpum treatment e 30,in OPG, following for 39,48 % in S. 20 % in G. americana treatment. In this period, there was an increase of 27,98 % in OPG in the animals treated with S. cumini and 139,72 % in the control group. During the treatment period, an increased rate of weight gain from 4,9 to 16,04 % was also observed in all treatments, and the eosinophil count was reduced 43 % in the control, 17 % in the A. humile treatment, compared with a 5 % increase in the G. americana treatment, 43 % in the S. lycocarpum treatment and 12 % in the S. cumini treatment. This study concluded that the in vitro test the A. humile showed the best activity in inhibiting the eggs hatch, and in the in vivo test S. cumini was responsible for the best activity after the treatment and A. humile showed the best result in the residual period against the nematode parasites of sheep.
